I have been thinking alot about traditions. I remember getting new pajamas on Christmas eve, sharing what I was thankful for at Thanksgiving, making and decorating cookies with my dad and siblings, driving around and looking at Christmas lights, and lots of other things that made the holiday season special and fun for me. I'd like to do the same for my kids. So, here are some things that I'd like to start or continue some we've been doing.
Thanksgiving:
Write and share on Thanksgiving day 3 things we are thankful for this year.
Playing games with the family.
Buying and taking food to the food bank.
Making art projects: turkey handprints, etc.
Christmas:
Get the kids new pj.s on Christmas eve
Picking out our Christmas tree on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and decorating it together.
Making and decorating cookies with the kids.
Give the kids an ornament symbolizing something about their year.
Going to a live nativity scene.
Adopting an angel tree kid or two.
Reading the birth of Jesus account from the Bible on Christmas.
And, I'd like some other ideas. What do you do or did you do as a kid to make the holidays special? Share your ideas with me.

We like to look at Christmas lights, go to church on Christmas Eve and make a gingerbread house.
We don't have many Thanksgiving traditions yet...
We always love going to the Trail of Lights - there is so much excitement in the air and it is fun to look at all of the displays and lights. Oh, and the kettle corn there helps too!! :)
For over 20 years we have had the same traditions that my kids will not give up(maybe me too!). We eat Chinese food on Christmas Eve, the kids each buy a Hallmark (has to be Hallmark) ornament for the tree. And the kids sleep in the livingroom on Christmas Eve! I hope they make room for Bailey this year!

I do the ornament thing, too. We decorate cookies, matching pj's. I thought Nathan might be ready to give up the pj's this year, but he still wants to do it. At my parent's house we hide a glass pickle ornament in the tree and whoever find it wins a cash prize! I usually win. I think Clay may have won once, but neither Marcia or Matthew have ever won. We started a tradition last year with the 4 of us having chocolate chip pancakes for Christmas morning breakfast.
I ran the turkey trot last year and Nathan is going to run the kids 1k this year. So I guess that's the start of our Thanksgiving traditions.
I love traditions, especially ones that involve the family and holidays. When the kids get older, I want to start a tradition of feeding the homeless or the hungry on Thanksgiving morning and then doing a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday night. Also, I love the shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, even though it's packed like crazy. Isn't that funny since I don't relaly like to shop?!! It's because of the great sales!
At Christmas, my family puts on a Christmas pageant about Jesus' birth. Everybody has a part to play, from the babies up to all the adults. We even get out the sheets and dress up and make angel wings and all. My brother writes the scripts and the lines reflect the person who plays that part. Of course, it's easy to put on a family pageant when you have 30 something people in your family! It's a lot of fun. I'll post pics from this year's on my blog. I also make my great great grandmother's sugar cookies every year. That's some of our traditions.
